O.K. No one likes to clean the bathroom, right? I am the only one out there who hates to scrub a shower? With 3 kids, a hubby and now 2 puppies who use the shower, it gets very dirty VERY fast. Usually, I clean the entire thing on the weekends and do the bottom once during the week. Sometimes more if we bathe the puppies. So, I love "the works" cleaner. Love the way it cleans, the way the bottom of the shower feels on my feet right after it is cleaned. I know, you all are thinking that I am such a freak. Kinda like the same feeling you get when you slip into a bed of just washed sheets. AHHHH.
Anyways, back to reality. Now, in my quest for home made cleaners, I found a recipe for a home made shower cleaner this morning. My first thought was huh? 2 ingredients can't be as good as "the works", no way Jose. But I had time on my hands, and thought what could it hurt? So, I made the gallon of this mixture, filled up my new spray bottle and off to the bathroom I went. To clean the shower, I use old kitchen sponges, you know the ones you do the dishes with then they start to stink? Yep those. Now with the new dishwasher, I don't hand wash anymore, but that's another story.
Back to the shower... With the works this is my routine... Open the window, turn on the fan, spray the hell out of one section, then run from the room. Let it sit for a few then come back scrub, gasp, cough, rinse and then repeat.
This solution... I never opened up a window, didn't turn on the fan. I started from the top down like normal, and I could not believe the scum that was going down the drain as I rinsed the section I scrubbed. If a dirty shower wasn't so gross, I so would have posted pictures of my shower sections as I cleaned. Holly COW! Now, I used a bunch of elbow grease when cleaning because I wasn't too sure how it would work. MY god! As I got further down the walls, I went back to the top and just rubbed my hand on the wall to feel how clean it actually was... like a babies tushie! My shower has a little edge on the wall where the kids place bars of soap and razors so that gets extra grimie. There were a few spots where even the works couldn't get it "like new" clean. This cleaner did!
My shower also has those little groves or bumps on the bottom that get caked with dirt when the kids have super dirty feet. Yeah, I know... how gross. You KNOW it's clean because you cleaned it but still looks dirty? Yep that was my bottom of the shower next to the drain. ALL GONE!!! I am so excited to share this recipe with the entire world!!! AND it is super easy! Here's how to make it in less than a minute.
Use a old cleaned milk jug. Fill it half way with tap water. Add 4 ounces of liquid Castile Soap. then add 16 ounces of rubbing alcohol or lol any clear grain alcohol like Vodka. Fill to the top with tap water, gently mix and Wala! Done! A entire Gallon to use!
I got Liquid Castile soap at my health food store, because I live in the middle of no where, but I'm sure it is found else where. It is a tad expensive, but it is super concentrated so 4 ounces for a gallon goes a long way! Rubbing alcohol at the dollar store is super cheap as well! The recipe says you can use it as a deep cleaner like I did or to spray down a clean shower after showering to keep it clean. I spray and spray when I clean because to me more is better, right? So, FYI the alcohol was a tad stinky, so I think I'm going to add a few drops of Lavender Essential oil. But really, it was nothing like the works small. I mean I was leaning over the bottom of the tub spraying and scrubbing and it really didn't bother me all that much, not enough to stop and sit back and take a few breaths.
There you have it, my lesson on cleaning a shower, how to make your own cleaner and a small window into my crazy life!
Enjoy!
